Phil’s career path is a testament to both resilience and the transformative power of a supportive workplace. With over four years of experience in the steel industry—where he honed his skills in bending, cutting, and operating small cranes—Phil transitioned into the water treatment sector, taking on the role of Water Treatment Engineer, before being promoted to Supervising Engineer for Wales and the South West here at SMS Environmental.
Joining SMS Environmental
Phil joined SMS in August 2023, having been referred by a former colleague who recognised his potential. With a strong foundation in engineering, he quickly distinguished himself, and within six months, he was promoted to supervise a team of nine skilled water hygiene engineers. Phil manages daily operations, plans resources, and addresses challenges, all while maintaining a sharp focus on quality and team development.
Responsibilities and Team Management
As Supervising Engineer, Phil is responsible for overseeing a range of water treatment processes, including calorifier inspections, tank cleans, and routine maintenance tasks. His commitment to ensuring that his team is well-equipped and prepared for each job has led to a more cohesive and efficient work environment. Phil reviews each engineer's calendar, ensuring that the right personnel are allocated to various contracts across North Wales, South Wales, and Bristol, fostering a sense of ownership and accountability within his team.

Unlike his previous role at a competitor, where he often felt like just another number, SMS has provided him with the opportunity to be seen as an integral part of a community. The training programmes, including City & Guilds Assured courses and specific plumbing training, have further enriched his skill set. He now feels more competent in reading and understanding schematics, a skill he developed after joining SMS, which has significantly enhanced the quality of his work.
