Choosing a Plumbing career over being an Electrician: Tom's Career Beginnings
Tom Hewlett's career in plumbing and remedial services started with a simple choice between two trades – Electrician or Plumber. Inspired by his dad who was a Trainee Window Fitter, Tom decided to pursue plumbing. He completed a 6-month apprenticeship before eventually crossing paths with Founding Director, Nick Hearn, who helped him secure a position at SMS Environmental in 2017.
Motivated by the high-profile clients our company had, Tom found himself drawn to the organisation. Working on projects such as plant room refits, and gaining valuable experience under the guidance of industry experts like Supervising Engineer, Ian Field and our Works Supervisor, James Max, Tom's foundation in plumbing gave him a head start, allowing him to progress quickly.
Starting as an Apprentice Plumber, Tom's career journey involved moving from small plumbing tasks to remedial work and PPM. Building strong relationships within the company, especially with mentor, Chief Operations Officer, Toby Maddox, led to opportunities for progression. Tom joined the Account Manager team as a Trainee Account Manager not long after, handling a large portfolio of contracts.
