Discover How Ashley Turned Passion into a Thriving Career in Water Management and What You Can Learn from His Unique Path

Ashley Passmore embarked on his professional journey at the age of 15, gaining invaluable experience as a waiter at a local hotel owned by a chain of hotels. This initial role not only introduced him to the world of hospitality but also instilled the importance of hard work and customer service.

After celebrating his 18th birthday, he expanded his skillset by learning bar work, all while juggling shift work with day portering, which allowed for a consistent schedule of 8 AM to 6 PM.

Academic Pursuits

With a foundation in service delivery and a taste for the dynamic work environment, Ashley pursued higher education at Cardiff University, where he completed a BSc in Chemistry from 2001 to 2005.

His academic background laid the groundwork for his future roles, particularly in industries that would intersect with science.

Transition to the Water Industry

In 2005, Ashley relocated to Reading, using his hospitality experience to secure a bar job, and soon after, he was introduced to SMS Environmental through a network of customers.

He began his career at SMS as an Administrator, where he honed his organisational skills, quickly transitioning to water hygiene engineering. Ashley thrived in roles that allowed him to work outside, conducting out-of-hours disinfections alongside his administrative duties.

Though he briefly ventured into telecommunications sales and self-employment as a contractor for PPI claims, Ashley ultimately returned to the water industry. He began working for a private utility company which specialises in water and wastewater, he found fulfilment in Clean Water Quality Assurance, which solidified his passion for hands-on work and client interaction.

Rise to Risk Assessment

Ashley’s journey in the risk assessment field began in September 2014, when he returned to SMS Environmental for a role focused on Risk Assessments and PPM (Planned Preventive Maintenance). His experience in PPM laid the groundwork for understanding client needs and operational systems. Ashley's ability to adapt and learn quickly enabled him to excel in his new role.

With a desire for continuous improvement, Ashley attended training courses and pursued certifications, eventually shadowing experienced risk assessors to deepen his expertise. A significant opportunity arose during a challenging risk assessment project, where he supported a senior colleague, gaining valuable insights and recognition for his contributions.

Leadership and Team Management

Promoted to Supervisor in 2022, Ashley now manages a team of five, overseeing projects across various regions, including the South of England including London. His leadership style emphasises proactivity and development, ensuring his team members reach their full potential. Ashley finds fulfilment in this role, highlighting that no two days are the same and relishing the problem-solving aspects of risk assessments, which he compares to working on a puzzle.

Achievements and Future Aspirations

One standout achievement in Ashley's career is attaining UKAS Risk Assessment Accreditation, which attests to his competency in the field. Receiving praise from Department Management and Company Directors, further fuelled his motivation. Looking ahead, Ashley aspires to advance both his career within SMS and the standards of the industry.
