Why Purify Air In Your Building

Environmental air cleaning manufacturers have developed a variety of different solutions in recent years for commercial use, with all of them claiming to produce clean and healthy air for indoor environments. Before we get into the different types of air cleaning systems, it’s important to understand the difference between the technologies and how they work, also considering their safety and efficiency.

The majority of air purification technologies on the market are what is known as ‘passive’, in that they can only have an effect when the air containing the pollutant comes into close range or passes through the unit. A few examples of passive systems are UV-C and various PCO and ionisation technologies. Put simply, these systems are only effective when certain operational conditions are met.

Active Air Purification

Now let’s take a look at Active Air Purification technology. This type of system is not limited in the way that passive systems are and are effective in every cubic centimeter of indoor air and surface space simultaneously and continuously. In short this means pollutants are instantly treated regardless of where they are within the indoor space and when they enter.

If we put this into a real life scenario, take SARS-CoV-2 in an office space for example, Active Air Purification technology targets the virus immediately, whereas with the passive technology the virus remains active until it passes by or through the unit.

“Active technology is not limited in this way. Pollutants are treated wherever they are in the indoor space, which is particularly significant in the context of Covid-19 transmission.
Active technology tackles the virus immediately. Some technologies claim to be effective against SARS-CoV-2 but very few have been tested against the aerosolised form of the virus in real-world conditions”.
