Cooling tower water systems require annual legionella control programmes in place and risk assessment reviewed

Water cooling towers are reliant on proficient management programmes to ensure they continue to run effectively, are safe and compliant with HSE legislation.

The thermal efficiency and longevity of the cooling tower and equipment depend on the proper management of recirculated water.

The water used in cooling towers needs to be monitored carefully to prevent Legionella outbreaks. Failure to maintain and clean a cooling tower properly poses a threat to public health, resulting in severe penalties for the responsible person if they fail to ensure they are safe.

Water cooling towers are reliant on proficient management programmes to ensure they continue to run effectively, are safe and compliant with HSE legislation.

The cooling water treatment programme should be capable of controlling not only legionella and other microbial activity, but also corrosion, scale formation and fouling to maintain the system’s cleanliness.

HSG 274 Part1: The control of legionella bacteria in evaporative cooling systems

Besides treating the circulating cooling water in cooling tower systems to minimise scaling and fouling, the water needs to be filtered to remove particulates and also dosed with biocides and algaecides to prevent growths that could interfere with the continuous flow of the water as well as preventing the growth of Legionella.

Under some conditions, biofilm of micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae can grow very rapidly in the cooling water and can reduce the heat transfer efficiency of the cooling tower. Biofilm can be reduced or prevented by using chlorine or other chemicals.

SMS Environmental has a team of qualified and experienced engineers who are knowledgeable about cooling towers including their integral parts and associated plant, and will ensure that the towers are maintained and monitored in accordance with HSE guidelines and legislation.

Our experienced teams undertake bespoke monitoring and auditing programmes and analysis on cooling water systems and feed water, based on the operating parameters of the system and the make-up of water.

Our effective monitoring programmes, coupled with cleaning, chlorination and disinfection regimes, boost operating efficiency and ensure plant longevity and reliability.
